Haut Medoc

The Haut Medoc lies to the South of the Medoc overall area, beginning just north of Saint-Estephe and finishing close to the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux. It covers over 2 thirds of the entire Medoc appellation, and is without doubt, the most famous wine area in the world, covering more fine wine chateaux and appellations by hectare, than any other wine region in the world.

About & History

The appellation Haut Medoc applies to any wine that is produced from grapes grown in this area. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates on the cool, gravel-rich soils, with good drainage, which are the best for the development of this slow-ripening grape variety. The Merlot grape, which plays a supporting role to Cabernet Sauvignon in this area, performs best on the heavier clay soils, away from the river.

The Haut Medoc is home to four of the five Premier Cru Bordeaux designations – Pauillac, Saint-Estephe, Margaux and Saint–Julien. In addition, there are 2 other specified appellations, which are less known and recognised, but offer superb value for money for Bordeaux lovers and for those who are at the early stages of exploring the region.

This blog might well be for the real enthusiasts as it is based off my research essay I submitted for my Diploma qualification recently. So, all I have to say is, good luck! But, in all truth, this topic is very prevalent in the wine world and gives a real insight into changing vineyard and winemaking practices. Environmental impacts are fast becoming a key concern for consumer and producer alike as the effects of climate change have increased over the past few decades, if you couldn’t tell (how…

The best of the Rhone? - Guigal
Guigal was established shortly after the Second World War by Étienne Guigal who started with another famous Rhone name, Vidal Fleury. The Guigal name really came to the fore when wine critic, Robert Parker led the charge in heaping praise upon their Côte-Rôtie wines. Guigal have since purchased Château d'Ampuis in the 90s, which is now their headquarters and fittingly, the home where Étienne Guigal’s wife used to work as a…
