Alicante Wines

Alicante wine region is in the locale of Valencia, of course based around the city of Alicante meaning warm temperatures indeed. For the reds, the main grape here is Monastrell which is well suited to the arid climate. They are generally full-bodied, high tannin, high alcohol wines with oaky notes. For the whites, you'll find lots of Moscatel de Alejandría (Muscat of Alexandria) specifically in the Marina Alta sub-zone where both sweet and dry wines are produced.

A point of difference here is the fortified sweet red wine known as Fondillon, a historic wine made by just a few winemakers. It is made from Monastrell and must spend at least 10 years in oak. They are delicious but pricey!
