El Bombero Tasting Notes
By, Chris Burr, Master of Wine
The Iberian peninsula, Spain and Portugal, have been producing wine since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, over two thousand years.
Mainly for local consumption, they have discovered which grape varietals work best, where the best growing regions and sites are, and what tastes and flavours work best with the local food.
After so many years, the cost of production is low, hence some wonderful value for money. One such region is in central eastern Spain, in Carinena near the beautiful town of Zaragoza.
Laithwaites import and sell a lovely example of the full bodied dark, almost black, fruity wine from the region called El Bombero, and have just started selling the wonderfully spicy 2020 vintage which is a real fruit bomb.
Made from very old vine Garnacha, (the same grape in France called Grenache, the main grape in Châteauneuf) this is a real crowd pleaser, and perfect for barbecues, roasts, and big gutsy stews.
For less than £10 a bottle, this shows what good value Spain can produce.
