Sierra de Gredos Wines

Sierra de Gredos is less a Spanish Wine region and more a general area description of the mountain range west of Madrid which has various wine regions within it. It doesn't officially have its own region labelling of origin for wines which results in a labelling mix. They can be labelled as Vinos de Madrid, Mentrida, which is in Castilla-La Mancha, Cebreros or Castilla y León.

Due to this lack of obvious providence and recognition, wine from here is generally inexpensive and high production volume. However, recently some producers have begun to look at quality here, focusing on old vine Garnacha. The Garnacha here tends to be lighter in tannin than other wine regions of the world. There is also an artisinal aspect where there is little intervention in the winemaking process, allowing the wines mostly to develop on their own using wild yeast and low levels of preservatives and so on. White wines are mostly made from Albillo Real, which makes full-bodied wines with citrus and floral flavours.
