Jumilla Wines

Jumilla lies in the region of Murcia on flat plains and wide valleys between Alicante and La Mancha. Monastrell is the top grape here with about 70% of plantings, suited as it is to the hot climate. In the late 80s, the region underwent a transformation, ironically thanks to a disease called phylloxera which killed a majority of the vines. This forced them to replant with higher quality grape clones and improve on the past, leading to a slow but steady improvement in quality. You'll aslo find plantings of Cencibel (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah among others - these are usually blended with Monastrell.
