There are many estates in this area, but also a large number of cooperatives.

The softer, alluvial and limestone soils, and the gentler slopes all have an impact on the wines, which , whilst still intense and perfumed, are ready for earlier drinking that Hermitage or Cote Rotie.

The only permitted white grape varieties are the Roussanne and the Marsanne, which , unusually can be vinified, together with the Syrah, to a maximum of 15%, in order to add elegance and perfume to the style of wine.

Style: Spicy, darkly coloured, and packed with forest fruits and a hint of spice – full-bodied and great food wines.

Grapes: Syrah, Roussanne, Marsanne.

Good with: Barbecues, stews, and rich braised meat dishes.
