This is one of the most prestigious and revered names in Burgundy, often referred to as ‘the king of Burgundy’, due to the richness, masculinity, and power of the best of the wines.

The appellation is entirely for red wine, from the Pinot Noir, and boasts 9 Grand crus, the most of any Cote d’Or communes; it also has 26 Premier crus vineyards. It is known for the longevity and structure of its wines, and has an almost unique ‘gamey’ character in the style and aromas of many of its wines, due to the red clay and marl soils, and protected vineyard sites, sheltered by the Montagne de la Combe Grizard.

Originally known as Gevrey, after the village, it was named Gevrey-Chambertin, after its most famous and acclaimed vineyard. This started a trend, which continued further south, with the most famous vineyard being linked in status name to the village or commune, such as Chambolle-Musigny, and Chassagne-Montrachet.

The majority of the Grand cru vineyards lie on the mid slopes to the south of the village, with the Premier Crus dominating the west side.

One of the greatest issues with Gevrey-Chambertin is the inconsistency of its wines; it produces over 2 million bottles of wine, from just over 1000 acres of vines. The best are world class; but there are many producers and negociants, who are more intent on marketing the name of the region, and therefore drive for higher yields in the vineyards, from the growers, and therefore, in simple terms, a lowering of quality. Check the grower, or the negociant, before you buy.
