St Julien

Whilst St Julien does not boast a First Growth wine, it is universally acclaimed, as producing, some of the most elegant, supple and stylish wines of the Haut – Medoc; wines, that have a degree of delicacy and subtlety; wines that age gloriously, with a balance of elegance and power, and are less ‘full-on’ than the neighbouring Pauillac commune. St Julien wines also offer some of the very best value , at the top end of the Bordeaux scale.

St Julien is home to some of the best known 2nd growth wines – namely, Gruaud Larose, Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Las Cases, and Leoville Poyferre. As is typical of the Medoc in general, the area is very small, but the changing soils, and unique microclimates, create diversity. Saint Julien backs straight onto Chateau Latour, in neighbouring Pauillac, yet the wines are very different, partly due to the increase in gravel in the soil, towards the south of the Medoc vineyards, which leads to more supple, lighter, delicate wines in general.
