What Food What Wine? Competition
The concept is simple. What Food What Wine? takes 10 of Britain’s classic dishes, from fish and chips to apple crumble via chicken tikka masala and roast lamb. Using a crack team of food and wine experts – including the world’s best sommelier Gérard Basset MS MW – they find the best wines to match with each dish. The aim is to help consumers experiment with confidence when it comes to finding wines to go with their favourite dishes.
Judging What Food What Wine
As the UK’s first major food and wine matching competition, it differs from other wine competitions in that all wines are judged true blind. The only details the judges knew is whether the wine is under or over £10 – ie an everyday bottle or a special purchase.
Ultimately, the only thing that matters in this competition is how well the wine goes with the food. It’s a completely level playing field for wines from all over the world.
The judges made for an incredible team of food and wine experts, including the world’s best sommelier, Gérard Basset MS MW OBE, together with Guardian columnist and acknowledged food-and wine expert Fiona Beckett, BBC Good Food Magazines' Sarah Jane Evans MW, Ronan Sayburn MS from Hotel du Vin along with TV wine personalities, Susie Barrie MW and Peter Richards MW.
