A Selfridges Christmas – The Selfridges Selection
Updated 14/12/2023
Every year you’ll find yourself either scratching your head for a gift that looks great or hunting for a special treat to look forward to throughout the 24 days of build-up. Selfridges will provide. It is a fantastic place to get your wine from with the likes of the expertly curated Selfridges Selection to premium Whisky and Cristal Champagne. Not only that, but you can pick up all your other essentials too with the Selfridges flair and quest for quality. So, whether you are hosting, gifting or just needing something for you, this article has you covered with some of the best Christmas treats around.
The first thing to note when it comes to wine is that Selfridges are running 10% off 6 or more bottles throughout the festive period to help you save on your seasonal tipples. The other thing for the generous gifters to note is that Selfridges have a beautiful 3-bottle wooden case you can package your wine gifts in as well.
One great wine to get your hands on this year, as in every year, is of course mulled wine. The Selfridges Selection Mulled Wine massively elevates the usual £3 supermarket bottles or DIY kitchen attempts. No Christmas is complete without that warming cup of mulled wine so why not indulge in Selfridges’ fabulous version infused with frankincense, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus peel, cloves, star anise and vanilla. I’m feeling warmer already.
Once you’ve begun to warm up from the cold, you’ll find yourself settling into a celebratory mood no doubt. This is where the Selfridges Selection Prosecco has you covered. A genuine step up from the usual, this comes from the Adami winery in Treviso which was awarded a top 100 winery of the year award. Crisp and refreshing, it is the perfect aperitif for hosting in style. You can even personalize the label If you are looking for a gift. Find it here.
Dazzle your guests…and have a Christmas your ghosts of Christmas past will be envious of.
For the toast (and cheese), you will be looking for Champagne. Why not enjoy the sumptuous Selfridges Selection Champagne from the esteemed Philpponnat family? It has intensity and freshness abounding with a lovely touch of oak to round out the palate. It even has Krug’s signature grapefruit flavour! Time to drop the usual names that you go to out of brand awareness rather than love, get something new and genuinely enjoy it. If you are looking to gift this, you have the option to get the personalized version too. Find it here.
Next, wines for the Turkey! As far as whites go, I am torn between the zesty Sancerre with refined gooseberry and grassy notes versus the Chablis, with its riper, more rounded citrus fruits. If you want a wine with more body and oomph, the Chenin Blanc from Radford Dale is a must have with a complex and characterful bouquet.
The reds have to start with the Chateauneuf du Pape, although this perhaps suits a more red meat based Christmas dinner. Made from vines at least 50 years old, it is powerful and spicy with smooth, supple tannins and lots of red fruit flavour. Another great option for the bold lovers is the Malbec. Brimming with blueberry and chocolate flavours, it is a hedonists dream. Something to sit better with Turkey would be the Selfridges Selection Chianti Salcheto. Bursting with red cherries, strawberry and cranberry fruits with a well balanced acidity, this wine puts on a fantastic show for lighter reds.
Finally, to settle down in the evening nothing beats a quality Port. The Selfridges Selection Whytingham's Finest Reserve port is one of the ultimate choices this year. A careful blend of 2007 and 2008 provide a fruity forward palate with excellent balance to hold the backbone up. The age of the blended wines add some lovely complexity with a slight nutty character.
You can pick up more than just the wines from the Selfridges Selection as well. Combine your 9-months matured Christmas Pudding with their handmade Brandy Butter (complete with a healthy dash of brandy).
Dazzle your guests with the Chocolate truffle selection box or Marzipan Stollen and have a Christmas your ghosts of Christmas past will be envious of.
