We have worked with Fine Wine Offers to put together this exciting, bold and flavoursome bundle of Winter warmers. What's In The Case?
Il Puro Merlot, Veneto
This is a meatier Merlot than many available on the market. Say goodbye to same old same old, soft boring Merlot and hello to something with a bit more backbone: it’s full-bodied & flavoursome.
On the nose you’ll find dark fruits alongside cocoa powder and wood smoke which hint at the oak ageing. To taste it is much the same, although the fruits actually felt much brighter. Think ripe red cherry and cranberry. On top of that, it had a lovely undertone of dried herbs and the finish culminated into that chocolate powder nicely.
It’s got both the weight and staying power to go with hearty foods and keep you warm in the evenings.
Mi Terruno Malbec Reserve, Mendoza
It’s hard to go wrong with a Malbec when thinking about Winter wines, and this one certainly hits the spot. The grapes are handpicked meaning you are getting the very best stuff! To kick it off, the nose delivers vanilla, dried red and black fruits along with a toasty note.
On the palate this wine again delivered a nice chocolatey flavour with fine-grained tannin. If you can wait (hard, I know), I’d suggest letting this one breathe as I found it open up even more after about 30mins of sitting in the glass with fresher fruit flavours, spice and even more vanilla influence. It’s smooth and a crowd-pleaser that’s perfect for food pairing.
Bladen Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough
I was probably most excited to try this wine as Bladen are well-renowned as one of New Zealand’s top Marlborough winemakers. And, it is my standout from the case.
It exuded quality. The tropical fruit you almost always find in Marlborough (passion fruit, guava, gooseberry) was beautifully balanced with fresh cut grass and nettle notes. This is always what I look for in Sauvignon, this sublime balance of tropical intensity with fresher, aromatic qualities. There’s also a nice bit of complexity from red apple notes too.
You may think that Sauvignon at Winter is a bit of a strange choice, but this wine is likely to be one of the most textured Sauvignon’s you will try. It has a full body with some phenolic grip (grape molecules associated with tannin in red), which made it rounded and filled your palate. Yet, it was still super fresh with a long, mouth-watering finish. This is a must-try.
Chateau Canet, Minervois Blanc
After the Sauvignon this was probably my second favourite of the case. A blend of Roussanne and Bourboulenc, two grapes that are rather dear to my taste buds, this was a great bit of Southern French winemaking.
The Roussanne brings tropical pineapple flavours, apricot, quince and provides a creamy, fuller body and rounded edges. The Bourboulenc is the crispifier in this wine, adding pear, green apple, lemon and bringing the acidity to keep it in balance. It’s a great aperitif with a bit of extra oomph.
Canaletto Rosso, Italy
This is a red blend with grapes from different regions of the Girelli family’s plentiful vineyards that really does carry all the hallmarks of Italian red.
Compared to the other two red wines in the case this is a lighter red that’s bright and fresh with juicy red cherry, cranberry and plum delivering the fruit forward palate. Underneath this there’s a little bit of a herbal streak and some oak influence to add to its complexity. It’s immensely easy drinking and just screams Italy.
Canaletto Bianco, Italy
This is the white blend from the family's vineyards which shows off as a crisp and pure white with a real fruit focus.
The fine balance between crisp acidity and intense fruit flavour make this an instant hit. It’s citrussy and vibrant with green apple, lemon, lime and a floral jasmine undertone to give it some aromatic lift. On the finish I’d even go so far to say there was a little hint of almond rounding it out nicely. Soft, flavoursome and refreshing.
