Peninsula de Setubal Wines

Península de Setúbal is located just south of Lisbon between the Tejo and Sado rivers. Generally it is a warm climate with mountains in the south providing elevation for some cooler vineyards. There are two DOCs to look out for - Palmela and Setúbal.

Palmela is mostly for red wines that must be made from at least 67 per cent Castelão. They are deep, dark wines with plenty of body, red berry fruit and often oak spice. Many international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah also grow well on the cooler sites. Whites are principally made from Fernão Pires, Moscatel and Arinto, although once again you'll find many international varieties here too. Setúbal is reserved for sweet wines from Moscatel grapes. Wines labelled under the generic Península de Setúbal VR can be made from a range of Portuguese and international varieties without real limitations.
