Islay Scotch Whisky

Islay Scotch Whisky is produced on the island of Islay on the southern most tip of the Herbidean Islands. There are 9 active distilleries on the island which benefit from a great amount of Whisky Tourism including the "Festival of Malt and Music" which is held once a year. The style of the Whiskies produced on the island tends to follow a geographic pattern. With the South Coast distilleries (Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Argeb) having smoky characters derived from peaty levels in the barley and natural water. The other distilleries on the island make much lighter whiskies which are generally lightly peated.
