What is Vodka?

Vodka is one of worlds most popular alcoholic drinks composed primarily of water and ethanol, although now flavourings are added to give certain Vodka brands a modern appeal. Traditional vodkas have an ABV of around 37.5% and it is usually produced from the fermentation of grain, where rye and wheat are considered the best. You can also find Vodka made from potato, molasses, soybeans, grapes, rice and sugar beets. Traditionally drunk neat and freezer-chilled, it is also commonly used in cocktails or drunk with a mixer. The word Vodka can be traced back to 1405 in Poland, where it is referred to as medical drink.

A common property in the production of Vodka is the use of filtering, either in the still or afterwards where the distilled vodka is filtered through activated charcoal to absorb other substances that can impact the vodka flavour. In more traditional vodka however, distillers tend to use distillation over filtering to preserve the natural vodka flavours.

Vodka has premiumised in recent years, with artisinal and premium brands popping up everywhere. It is less the drink of the troubled, and increasingly seen as a modern mixer or refined drink to have neat. Of course, the younger crowd are being attracted by many interesting vodka flavours, from simple apple and cherry to more wacky kumquat and bison grass.
