The dominant variety planted in the recently recognised (2007) Alsace Grand Crus of Kaefferkopf is Gewurztraminer, yet for us it was this 100% Riesling that stood out from the crowd at a recent tasting. It is wonderfully expressive with quite a lot of power and intensity, but it is the natural freshness and balance of the wine that is totally captivating and impressive. With notes of orange marmalade and ripe apricot, it has weight and texture but is thankfully not overtly sweet or cloying. A wine that is ready to enjoy right away but will reward those with a little extra patience handsomely, after a few years cellaring.
