The ubiquitous Merlot grape has adapted incredibly well to all manner of soil and climate around the world, capable of producing some of the most prestigious wines from classic regions but providing exceptional quality at more affordable prices elsewhere. We found this little pocket of Merlot on granite soils in the Coastal Region, South Africa, where water is scarce and the vines’ roots dig deep for water, resulting in small berries of intense red-fruit flavour and a lovely silky texture on the palate.
