The Story of Helles

This distinctive lager style was developed in Munich, Southern Germany in the late 19th century as an answer to the growing popularity of Czech Pilsner. Bavarian brewers were not happy that their original brewing method left the house and was no longer associated with them. The production method of Helles is young and it combines the experience of German, British and Czech brewing artisans.

Helles, as its name indicates, is golden pale in colour [helles = bright, light], but it exhibits a noticeable malty breadiness that does not show in Pilsners. A full body, subtle sweetness, thick persistent head and low alcohol content, makes it the perfect drink of choice for relaxing and socialising.

Nowadays, Helles is well on its way to regaining its former glory, especially in Berlin, where the beer's traditional image has found appeal.
