What is Dunkel?

Dunkel is the second example of a traditional Munich-Bavarian lager but, unlike Helles, Dunkel is dark in colour [dunkel = dark]. It is also known as the most popular beer in Swiss Franconia. Some people use the term Dunkel to describe any type of dark beer, but this is not entirely correct.

The real Dunkel is produced in a fully codified and regulated way, using the original, precisely kilned Munich malt responsible for its amber or reddish-brown colour. Formerly a drink of the commoners, Dunkel can, in fact, be very refined and is the epitome of Bavarian brewing mastery. The taste is full-bodied, rich in malty, bready and caramel tones. Hops are used very cautiously and the cold conditioning process should be long enough to render the smoothness, richness and crispiness. If you wish to try the original München Dunkel Lager, you can do so from Paulaner, Augustiner, Ayinger or Kreuzberger Klosterbier, to name just a few.
