1987 was a very good vintage in Rioja, particularly in the later-ripening Rioja Alta, where the Viña Tondonia vineyards are located. This winery creates a robust and slightly rustic style of wine, using unusually long periods of barrel ageing for reserva, sometimes up to 6 years in older oak casks. A great example of mature reserva to enjoy now.

The colour of this wine is striking and deep with a vivid ruby edge. The fruit dominated on the nose and flavours of raspberry and blackberry came through on the palate, balanced by a little vanilla. Quite subtle for a rioja. Soft tannins and medium body with lots of acidity, staying on the palate very well.
