75cl / 14.5% - A favourite around the world, the Chocolate Block red wine is sourced from the Coastal Region of South Africa around Swartland and shows all the red fruit and fine tannins we’ve come to expect from this award-winning blend by winemaker Marc Kent. A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and a tiny bit of Voignier, it's medium-bodied and filled with notes of plum, blackcurrant, and cocoa powder balanced by a spicy side with white pepper and liquorice. Excellent with game and slow cooked lamb.
The Chocolate Block Tasting Notes by Wine Expert, David Andrews, DipWSET
I'm not sure I need to say it, but there is undoubtedly a nice chunk of Chocolate. It is more of the dark, luscious Bourneville style making this nice and heady. The tannins even remind me of cacao powder which just add to the chocolate nature of the wine. Besides chocolate, you'll find balance comes in the form of dark fruits such as blueberry and bramble, which are often further complemented by herbal aromas like liquorice. Give it a few years in bottle and it'll start to develop a leathery character.
