Founded by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, Montes is considered one of the most iconic Chilean wineries, also thanks to its pioneering role in quality wine production in the country. The historic headquarters is located in Santa Cruz, but the estate extends over approximately 1,500 hectares with vineyards spread across different wine areas of Chile. The company today offers various lines of wines of different styles and price ranges, but its red wines, structured, and generous, are the most acclaimed ones.
The Carmenere grapes, to which small quantities of Syrah are added, are harvested from the Finca de Marchigüe vineyard located in the Colchagua Valley where the climatic conditions favor the development of an intense aromatic character. After the vinification operations, the wine rests in French oak barrels for 16 months.
Special Cuvee Carmenere is a mature and very balanced wine with a broad and complex aromatic profile that reveals herbaceous and blackberry notes, tobacco, and tapenade. On the palate, the wine shows a medium body and a good richness of flavors with velvety tannins and a soft character. It has good acidity and a long, persistent finish. It would pair perfectly with a peppered beef filet or a juicy burger with Portobello mushrooms.
