This Pinot Noir was harvested from the Upper Paddock vineyard in Yarra Valley, one of the highest altitude points in the Hoddles Creek estate. It is bursting with a bouquet of fresh strawberries, green herbs, oak and hints of spice, such as nutmeg. This wine is only released in years of excellent quality, so fans of Pinot Noir have a real treat on their hands.
Hoddles Creek is a family-owned estate, established by the D’Anna family in 1997. It has quickly grown to become one of the most well-regarded wineries in South East Australia, under the guidance of wine-maker Franco D’Anna. Their vineyards are located in the cool climate of the Upper Yarra Valley, on steep slopes that make the land impossible to farm with machinery.
The palate of this Pinot Noir reflects the bouquet, with an added dimension of deep savoury flavour. Earthy hints of forest floor and mushroom underpin juicy red fruits, fresh mint and mineral notes of crushed stone. Taut acidity and light, dusty tannins give this wine an excellent structure, suitable for ageing for a decade or longer. The undertones of earth and bitterness with surely develop with time. Consider pairing this wine with mushroom risotto, roast turkey or a tender beef casserole.
