Heirloom Vineyards, says Zar Brooks, was conceived in the 2000 vintage when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge. Zar is still silly, and the young winemaking student is now his wife, Elena, and she is winning plenty of awards for her Dandelion and Heirloom wines. Vibrant ruby red in colour with a nose that has perfumes of summer pudding fruits – including raspberries, redcurrants and cherries. There's even a hint of cedar and spice from the new French oak blends well with a subtle minty aroma and its palate is tangy and well balanced, with intense fruit flavours and silky tannins.
