Fifth-generation winemaker, Etienne Grivot is considered one of the most thoughtful and thorough winemakers in the Côte d'Or. His wines are renowned for their precision, depth and elegance with intense aromatics, made for ageing.
His two-hectare parcel of Clos de Vougeot was acquired by Etienne's ancestor, Gaston Grivot in 1919. Its vines now average over 40 years and its wine quality has been compared to that of Chambertin and Richebourg.
Location is key to the quality of the wines in this famous and huge Grand Cru. Etienne's vines are perfectly situated, producing a powerful Pinot with a dense bouquet of spiced blackcurrant and rich, fleshy fruit flavours - this is Etienne Grivot's pièce de résistance.
With all his Clos de Vougeots, they are robust when young and need to be given time to mature and develop finesse and elegance. When it is mature it is a generous, velvety wine, full of truffles and scents of violets.
This benchmark wine offers a hauntingly perfumed, complex bouquet of violets, mocha and crushed berries. It has an impressive structure and ripe, grippy tannins, and displays superb richness, concentration and purity of fruit. Patient cellaring will be richly rewarded.
