Chateau Pape-Clement has one of the longest and most distinguished pedigrees of Bordeaux. It was purchased as a country estate in 1300 by Bertrand de Goth, shortly before he became Pope Clement V (the man who put the 'Pape' in Chateauneuf-du-Pape!). The estate is now owned by brothers-in-law Leo Montagne and Bernard Magrez, and since 1986 has been managed by the enthusiastic Bernard Pujol, who has been entrusted with bringing the estate's wines up to their full potential. Robert Parker notes that "the result, first evidenced with a profound 1986, has been a succession of wines that now come close to rivalling the great Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion."
