The Best January Wine Sales

Bin End Wine Sales

January is here and, for some, that means a chance to do Dry January and start the year on a healthier footing. In my line of work, Dry January seems distinctly unlikely (not to mention I enjoy the taste too much) but that doesn’t stop me cutting down the frequency at least. This difficulty is compounded by the extremely tempting offers on the market at the moment with Bin-End Clearance and Winter Sales everywhere you look. Still, even if you are trying to avoid drinking, it shouldn’t stop you taking advantage of these offer prices and saving the wines for another day!

Bin End sales are not to be sniffed at. I think there is a lot of derision from self-professed Wine-Os and newbies alike about Bin Ends, with many expecting it to mean the stuff that nobody wanted. That is true to some extent. But the reasoning is wrong. Bin Ends are not inherently bad wines - labels, more popular competition and simply too quirky wine countries or grapes are always part of Bin End sales because the public often isn't as explorative as we like to think. But I am glad wine companies do make these efforts even if they end up selling them off at rock bottom prices at the end of the year. It's good to know that the buyers are passionate about wine rather than suits and spreadsheets.

Majestic Wine Bin-End Sale

Majestic Bin Ends

I in fact used to work at Majestic so am pretty clued in on their range and how most of the wines actually taste. Suffice to say, I was sad to see some of these wines on the Bin-End list but pleased to snap them up myself at a great discount last week. Here’s a few must haves:

Everyone (probably) knows about the Bread & Butter wines and almost certainly has a love or hate relationship with them. Well, for the lovers, the winemaker has more to her name with Whiplash Chardonnay and Whiplash Pinot Noir on sale. Fans of the B&Bs and oaky, big Californian wine in general will delight in these two, especially at £9.49 each (36% off!)

My other still wine highlights include the off-dry 'Eight Thousand Lakes' Riesling from Washington State for £5 off at just £7.99. This gives the German and Austrian producers a run for their money by balancing citrus and floral notes with gently honeyed sweetness. Feeling like something a little more unique? Carpe Diem Feteasca Alba is a true gem all the way from Moldova with Sauvignon-like qualities but more refined than the New Zealand style. At £5 off, for £9.99 you are getting much more bang for your buck than you would on Oyster Bay or similar brands!

For the red drinkers, there are two clear winners for me. The 'Corte Ferro' Nerello Mascalese-Frappato is exceptionally delicious Italian wine from Sicily. Made from native grapes, it is light bodied and akin to a Pinot Noir or Beaujolais with silky smooth texture and red berries galore. Well worth a mere £7.99. My final red is a bit more special but a steal at £12 off. The Voerzio Martini 'La Serra' Barolo is down to £27.99 which is genuinely fantastic value. This is classic Barolo at its best with spices, dried herbs, red and dark fruits. One to get for any upcoming Birthday celebrations or a happy treat in.

For fizz, the selection is sadly lacking but you’d be foolish to miss the 42% saving on small family owned Maurice Delabaye Cuvée Prestige Brut Champagne. Get it for only £22.99 today and enjoy the perfect balance of ageing and citrus freshness. This is a Champagne you won't want to miss out on.

There are plenty of others to look out for too, including Pecorino, Rhone Rose, Kiwi Albarino and even a Uruguayan one. There is a lot of good wine here and many very interesting too.

Vinatis Winter Sale and Bin Ends

Vinatis Winter Sale

A double whammy of sales from Vinatis will get French wine fanatics excited. These guys are the experts when it comes to French wine, blind tasting everything and getting free reign when it comes to region and grape across France. They don’t just stock French, but you’d be mad to place an order there without a few French wines in your basket.

Now you can save up to 33% in their Winter Sale with Champagne, Prosecco, Rioja, Beaujolais, Picpoul and many many more up for grabs. There are an awful lot to choose from so I’d recommend heading over yourself but I’d implore you to at least add the Guilhem Lambrusques by JM Aujoux at £13.61 to your basket. This exemplifies Southern French reds in the best way possible. Garrigue (dried herbs), liquorice, violet, spice and decadent fruits make this wine sing on the palate.

Bordeaux drinkers would do well to go for the Bordeaux Gold Medallist Mixed Case too. At just £10.57 per bottle, you are getting great wines punching well above their price point. These are great examples of typical Bordeaux wines making it ideal for anyone getting into the region or anyone who already knows how good it is.

Otherwise, take the last chance to stock up on the Bin End sale. Wines that didn’t quite capture their customers’ imagination but were not lacking on quality. What’s in a label anyway? Find the likes of Paul Mas, Kendall Jackson and Rothschild to name a few and get genuinely good wine for a bargain.
