The good people at Selfridges kindly sent us
The Classic Christmas Hamper
to review and it went down a treat at the office! I think at £100 this is truly magnificent and will be treated as the finest gift. You’ll certainly create some very generous gifts for yourself next year I’ll bet. Brimming with seasonal treats and wine, it’s arrival lets you know that Xmas is truly here.
The beautiful wicker basket on arrival was all I needed to know it would be good. Inside was a Selfridges Bauble with gorgeous salted caramel truffles (which I’m enjoying right now as I write), a Christmas Pud, a 20 pack Festive Tea blend, a musical Christmas tin featuring the iconic Selfridges store as decoration with tiny gingerbread snowmen inside, a bottle of Selfridges Selection Gavi DOCG and Selfridges Selection Côtes du Rhône. Plenty to savour and enjoy. You can read more about the excellent value Selfridges Selection Wines here
too.
We may as well start with the wine since that’s the highlight for me (of course). These wines are the perfect accompaniment to your Christmas Day feast because everyone will like them. Gavi hardly needs an introduction, but it was both crisp and floral at the same time, giving it a great bit of depth and suitable to kick off your starters. I was very impressed with the ripeness of the fruits yet classic Gavi acidity. This is Gavi at its best. The Côtes du Rhône is more suited to your mains. Fruit forward with subtle spice and leathery notes to add some depth of flavour. A tinge of licorice hangs onto the finish as well as some meaty elements. A savoury wine that teases your palate for more and more and exemplifies great Rhone perfectly!
Next in line to go were the musically confined gingerbread snowmen along with the festive tea. Fortunately they aren’t the kind of snowmen to melt when you dip them in something hot, but they certainly made an upgrade from dipping the usual Biscoffs in the PG Tips. Delicious biscuits and deliciously festive tea. The tea box simply says“Sweet. Zesty. Fruit.”and that I think covers the bases quite nicely. Inspired by panettone, it is probably the most aromatically beautiful tea I’ve had, filled with a blend of rooibos, elderberries, apple, rosewater, hibiscus and orange. Plus the bags are biodegradable, so it’s good for you and the planet.
The Christmas pudding was, as ever, the last to go. Made with a one-of-a-kind recipe from vine fruits, cider, rum, brandy, glacier cherries and almonds, I thought could this be a Christmas pudding I actually like? It’s also got 9 months maturation under its belt allowing the sweet, fruity flavours to really develop. So, on first bite, I thought, yes, I do actually like Christmas pudding now. And it simply went from there. Delicious and perfect for your table this year if you’re looking to actually enjoy dessert.
Bear in mind that you aren’t strictly limited to this hamper to get these items, if anything jumped out at you or you’re missing any of these key components, you can buy them individually and get them just in time for the big day!
