We have recently reviewed the excellent wine selection offered by Selfridges, on their easy-to-use website, but the store is always worth a special trip to visit.
These are not the usual selections one might find in most supermarket or grocery stores; this is an interesting and carefully selected range. It is difficult to find something that one wouldn't wish to try. Lots of smaller growers and all pretty up-scale stuff!
These are not the least expensive wines in the market, but Selfridges are offering 10% off most of their range for a six-bottle case or more.
So, for a special summer treat we have selected some great wines for a party in the garden.
Firstly, rose from Provence; dry and elegant and the perfect wine for a warm summer's day. Miraval is light, elegant with lovely dry complexity and floral fruit. Made by the excellent Perrin family of Chateauneuf du Pape, for superstars Angelina Joly and Brad Pitt who own the estate. £23 per bottle less the 10% when you buy six or more.
Miraval also make a junior version which is also good, but not quite as complex or intense; Studio by Miraval is sold at Selfridges for £18.99.
Selfridges also have a selection from the Coteau de Varois, in the heart of Provence on mainly chalky soils which give crisp "lift" to the rose made there.
Chateau d'Ollieres is £15.49 less the discount, although their website doesn't
state a vintage, so maybe it is non-vintage, but I doubt that. Indeed, if I have one criticism of the website, it is that they are vague on vintages.
Moving on to light summery reds, wines that go with grilled or barbecued meat or I find excellent with grilled fish. Wines which are fresh and light with soft or very gentle tannins, which can also, often best, be served slightly chilled.
First a Loire valley red. These are so good these days, due to some warmer summers and better wine making. There is a Sancerre Rouge from Andre Dezat. A light elegant fruity wine from the pinot noir grape.
From Burgundy, also a good Beaujolais Villages, a Gamay wine well made with good weight, but perfect for a summer barbecue; Andre Colonge et Fils's Villages is £14.90.
Finally a more gutsy wine, but again excellent for barbecued meat, their Marques di Murrieta Reserva Rioja, from one of the very best Rioja producers, £24.99.
The Vintage is not mentioned, but Reserva means that it will have good age and be perfect to drink.
Happy summer eating and drinking.
