McGuigan Black Label Red Tasting Notes from Master of Wine, Chris Burr

One of the most gluggable wines is McGuigan's Black Label Red.

From an hour or so North of Sydney in Hunter Valley, McGuigan's seem to have perfected the art of making a wine that can appeal to everyone.

Crafted mainly from the Shiraz grape and some other grapes to give balance and freshness, it has the typical ripeness of the region - velvety, soft and voluptuous, with masses of dark fruits, black cherry, plum and blackcurrant. It has quite a woosh of 13% alcohol, but with that "where's the next glass...?" feel about it.

This is not a complex or expensive wine - it is UK bottled which keeps the price down. I can see why it is so popular. At between £5.50 and £6.75 in most supermarkets, it can be sourced through WinesDirect often below £5 with their vouchers!

I was gifted a bottle of Mcguigan black label red, and thought it was a much more expensive wine. I have now enjoyed many more bottles over the last couple of years and still find it one of my great pleasures. Try it , you will not be disappointed.

Before receiving the McGuigan Black Label Red as a gift we wouldn’t have bought a ‘red’ assuming it to be a cheap sweet blend of lower quality grapes. I’m happy to say that snobbery was ill-informed and misplaced as this is a really excellent wine, very drinkable with or without food. We’ve enthusiastically tried all of the Black Label reds (and whites) since and found them to be top quality and have bought them again. As well as the Black Label range we particularly enjoyed the McGuigan Private Bin Merlot and their Classic Cab Sav both of which are priced even lower than the Black Label. The only McGuigan’s we wouldn’t buy again were the Bin 578 Merlot & Bin 956 Shiraz which price-wise came in somewhere between the Black Label and Classic / Private Bin. McGuigan has definitely been our wine find of the year. Don’t be put off by the name!

A flavoursome wine, easy on the pallet and goes with everything and anything ... top notch utility player. First came across this in the early 90’s loved it so much I put a couple of bottles on the tables at my first daughters christening back in Jan 1996

My parents first discovered this wine in N Ireland over 20+ years ago and I've been drinking it ever since! At first i used to have to bring it back over to England with me as I couldn't find it here but thankfully it's now in ready supply. Wonderful easy drinking wine with a slight sweet hint which makes it really palatable and I've recommended it to lots of friends too ever since

I was introduced to this wine by a friend at his hotel in Cornwall in mid 1990's. It has been consistently good over all this time, never fails to please. Good to drink on it's own or with food. Highly recommended.

The easiest drinking red wine I’ve tasted - would be a great introduction to red. It’s fruity and better served colder in my opinion.

Rating:   5/5

This is the smoothest red I have had the pleasure of tasting . Apparently this is due to the blending and the fact that they try to keep the taste as close to the previous batch as possible so you are always sure of what you are buying ....spoils you for any other red wine !

We first tried this wine while enjoying Sunday lunch at a local restaurant. We were so impressed by its rich fruity flavor and exceptionally smooth finish, we ordered some as soon as we returned home! It goes really well with red meat, Tomato based pasta, even more spicy foods. It has become our favorite red wine.

This is my very favourite red. It is so very easy drinking, not oaky but rich and luscious berry and plum fruit. Every one I introduce to it absolutely love it and ask what it is. Be warned though, it goes down so easily but it quite strong. It is also hard to source in supermarkets but luckily my local one stop stocks it. Well worth the money.you will not be disappointed I promise. Goes with anything and delicious on its own.
